How Does a Heat Pump Work?
Hot water heat pumps work by extracting heat from the surrounding air and transferring it to water, rather than generating heat directly.
Heat From Air, Transferred Into Water
A fan draws air into the heat pump’s evaporator, which contains a refrigerant that absorbs heat from the air.
As the refrigerant absorbs heat, it turns from a liquid into a gas. That gas is then compressed, raising its temperature significantly.
The hot, compressed refrigerant then passes through a condenser coil, where it transfers heat into the water storage tank.
Why It’s Efficient
Heat pumps are more energy-efficient than traditional gas or electric water heaters because they use electricity to move heat rather than directly generating it.
This can help lower running costs and reduce greenhouse emissions.
Air Is Drawn In
A fan draws surrounding air into the heat pump system.
Heat Is Absorbed
The evaporator and refrigerant absorb heat from the air.
Temperature Rises
The refrigerant gas is compressed, increasing its temperature.
Water Is Heated
